Grow Bags : Urban Allotments Installation

Submitted by jason on July 8, 2008 – 8:20 amOne Comment

There’s a ton of amazing things going on over at the London Festival of Architecture. The newest installation is Grow Bags: Urban Allotments, produced by What if Projects.

A formerly inaccessible and run-down plot of housing estate land has been transformed into a beautiful oasis of green. Seventy 1/2 tonne bags of soil have been arranged to form this allotment space. Within their individual plots, local residents are carefully tending a spectacular array of vegetables, salads, fruit and flowers. The VACANT LOT has become a space for growing food, socialising, picnics and BBQs.

If only there were a couple vacant lots in downtown Jacksonville, and the surrounding urban neighborhoods to give something like this a shot…

Jax Green’s doing a great job on some of the stuff they’re working on, such as the Springfield Community Garden. But, using this model of large bagged soil, instead of having to build planting beds seems like it would be much more efficient and allow for much more “greening” throughout Jacksonville.
