March 1st at 5:00 pm was the deadline for entries for Free Green’s Who’s Next home design competition. Contestants from all around the world have submitted designs based on their choice of two different programs. Profile 1: The Starter House. Profile 2: The Not So Empty Nest. For our entry, we decided to go with “The Starter House”. One of the main criteria for the starter home was that it be economical to build. We took that to heart and designed a home that is not only economical to build, but also economical and exciting to live in. We also took into consideration the ease of maintenance for the upkeep while still providing for a modern and sustainable lifestyle. Make sure to watch the short fly through video below.
The following is a brief scope of the design criteria:
- Economical to build and live in
- Young urban professional
- Planning a family (Definitely one maybe two kids)
- Moving to the nearby suburbs
- Husband is a IT Director (Will work from home most of the time in home office)
- Husband loves technology
- Husband is a technophile and loves his toys
- Wife is a nurse
- Love open floor plans (currently live in an urban loft)
- Want good public schools
- Small yard
- Small home with efficient use of space
- Home needs to be affordable and functional
- Functionality over tradition
- Any amenities should be done in a modern and “smart” way
- The couple wants to do their part for the environment
- As energy efficient as possible
- Home should be built with healthy materials
- They are looking for a home that does not seem to exist in the mainstream today
- 1800 square feet maximum
Thanks for taking the time to view our entry. We would love your support and please feel free to send the links to your friends so that they can vote too.

[...] Back in late October we attended the APA – The Engineered Wood Association’s Carbon Challenge Florida Design Competition Kickoff in at RiverTown in St. Johns, Florida and decided it would be fun to enter a competition that looked at both the aesthetics of the design and the ability to design a home with the lowest carbon footprint, while having to meet the design guidelines required by the RiverTown development. This was the second competition that we entered this year, back in March we entered the Free Green Who’s Next competition. [...]
