The Roscoe House: Update 1

As you may remember we started the Roscoe House discussion back in late April. We’ve now reached a point, where we can actually give a decent update on the progress of the design of a modern house that acts as both a permanent residence and a family vacation home. After the meeting, where we presented numerous massing options, the clients wanted to see further investigation on one of the proposals, which we playfully named the “slice of cheese”. Nicknamed because of the large sloping roof over the main wing of the structure, as you can see in the image below:

The clients particularly liked the internal courtyard that opened to the water and the strong statement of the sloped roof, especially the taller slope. After the conversation we began to further explore the shape and worked on different options, adding materials and details to the “cheese.” The two options that we put in front of the clients were:
Proposal One:

Proposal Two:

Below you’ll see slideshows of each proposal in very schematic form, with materials and details added. Proposal One, is bolder in color and material and with more vernacular detailing, such as exposed rafters and brackets. Proposal Two strips away the brackets, rafters, and bold colors, providing simple clean lines with the use of wood and formed concrete as the main materials.

Man, do I wish I was working for your guys. If this gets built I’ll cry tears of joy.
My critique:
While Proposal One offers more dynamic lines, bolder expressions of structure and material, I think Proposal Two actually makes a more bold and exciting statement of Modern Architecture. Two seems to be more industrial in it’s simplicity, much like Corbu’s work with the Villa Savoye and other works. One is almost a modern interpretation of typical florida southern architecture with the brackets and exposed rafters. I vote Two. Great job guys. Amazing work.

I dig proposal one. I like the Old Florida’esque design cues coupled with the modern design. I can’t really put my finger on why, but I also like the “texture” of the first proposal.
