The Urban Facelift Project #4 (118 Main Street Revisited)
Revisiting UFP #2, this time we’re focusing on the empty lot between the old Lerner Shop and 5 W Forsyth. We love the idea of working with deep, thin linear infill spaces because of the design challenges that type of site represents. This happens to be one of the few spots where this occurs downtown, so for this case study we’re going to show the infill project next to the previously revised Lerner Shop.
We have so much open space in downtown Jacksonville that it will take quite a long time before enough density is introduced to a point where anything old needs to be torn down to make room for the new. Of course this hasn’t been the case, whereas Jacksonville has lost many of its historic buildings over the years.

Love that modern urban infill. Now we just need some money (or rich friends) to build it! I imagine it to have an awesome rooftop garden as well.
is it just me or was this idea submitted either to the city or published somewhere? I recall at one time there was a developer/client who wanted to do something similar to this on that site. Of course, given City Council’s track record, it was violently shot down, burned to ash and buried in a deep dark hole, location unknown….typical.

Love the vertical use of space to fill the narrow lot. However, the old Lerner building was demoed a couple months ago, leaving nothing behind but and empty lot and the old store’s entryway flooring with “Lerners” inlayed. Kind of sad, would have loved to see it renovated and repurposed as your elevation suggests. actually would love to live in something like that!
